World Microbiome Day virtual seminar set for June 26

World Microbiome Day "The Bacteria Evolving Within Us"

Join the Vanderbilt Microbiome Initiative for a special World Microbiome Day seminar and Q&A session on Friday, June 26, featuring Professor Nandita Garud from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The virtual talk, “The Bacteria Evolving Within Us,” will begin at 11 a.m. CT. Register here. >>

World Microbiome Day 2020 celebrates all things microbial and the importance of understanding and controlling microorganisms for positive outcomes. The Vanderbilt Microbiome Initiative coordinates and accelerates microbiome scholarship at Vanderbilt University to develop long-lasting knowledge, tools, applications and resources on microbiomes.

Garud’s research targets the gene-rich ecosystem of our intestines to answer fundamental questions, such as “How rapid is evolutionary change in the human gut microbiome, and how is gut microbiome function changed and maintained?” Her scholarship advances a rich understanding of the tempo and mode of sequence changes in members of the human gut microbiome using metagenomic data and state-of-the-art analytics for detecting mutation, recombination, drift, migration and adaptation in prevalent species of the gut microbiome.
