During the event, which will be recorded, Wente and Kopstain will discuss how campus and classes will look and operate differently this fall to promote health and safety.

Changes will include beginning and ending the semester earlier, wearing face masks/coverings, sitting farther apart in classrooms, reducing the density of residential spaces, securing additional Vanderbilt-controlled housing options near campus, and authorizing additional upper-class students to live off campus. New strategies for creative socializing and virtual programming are being developed by various departments in partnership with student organizations.

Wente and John McLean, chair of the Faculty Senate and Stevenson Professor of Chemistry, hosted a town hall for faculty on June 15 to talk through the university’s planning process for resuming in-person classes. During the event, faculty discussion included questions about university travel policies, protocols for visitors to campus, disinfection methods for buildings and campus spaces, and the decision-making process for the Return to Campus Plan.

A second town hall for faculty is planned for Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. Registration information for the June 24 faculty town hall is forthcoming.

All available details on the university’s plans for the 2020-21 academic year can be found on Vanderbilt’s Return to Campus website.
