Incoming Chancellor Daniel Diermeier, an internationally renowned political scientist and management scholar, explores the essentials of crisis management and offers advice to business and political leaders on handling the COVID-19 pandemic in a newly published article and podcast.
In “How leaders can rise to the challenge of COVID-19,” published May 21 in Chicago Booth Review, Diermeier outlines the tools and perspectives leaders can use to help their organizations navigate difficult times.
“By building trust, managing fear, and encouraging a sense of duty and community orientation, any leader—whether in business, government, or the nonprofit sector, and in organizations big and small—can better navigate the difficult path of crisis management,” he writes.
Diermeier also explores these themes in the latest edition of the University of Chicago’s Big Brains podcast, in an episode titled “A Crisis Management Expert’s Advice on Handling Coronavirus.”

“The ability for a leader to … be realistic about what the challenges are … but then at the same time to inspire confidence that we can get through this and come out stronger—it’s absolutely essential,” Diermeier said.
A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Guggenheim fellow, Diermeier formerly served as provost of the University of Chicago. He was named Vanderbilt’s ninth chancellor on Dec. 4, 2019. His term as chancellor begins July 1.
