The Business of VU program, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance, is now accepting applications for its fourth cohort in fall 2020. The program offers Vanderbilt community members an opportunity to learn about the business operations of the university and the higher education landscape.
Business of VU was launched in fall 2017 and has since welcomed three cohorts of faculty, staff and student participants. Each class has focused on different elements of the higher education model and how Vanderbilt operates to leverage resources in support of the academic mission.
Topics planned for fall 2020 include: a higher education overview, Vanderbilt University governance, global impacts on higher education, the economics of Vanderbilt, debt and fundraising, university endowment, peer school comparisons, academic leadership, residential colleges, admissions, financial aid, research and innovation, university communications, state and federal relations, and identifying and managing risk. Applicants are asked to complete readings in advance and attend and contribute to lively discussions at each of the nine two-hour sessions.
The course is scheduled for Thursday evenings beginning in late August and running through early December. Applications are due Friday, May 29, and participants will be notified in mid-July of their acceptance status.
The program cohort is selected to represent a diverse set of campus perspectives and is limited to approximately 30 participants to ensure an engaging experience. Applications are considered based on level of interest, background of experience, and commitment to Vanderbilt University. Those not selected in this cohort will be considered for a future Business of VU program upon re-application.
