Five Steps to Building Your Career Network through the VUconnect Online Communityby Matt Anderson Jan. 28, 2020, 2:15 PM
Vanderbilt alumni form a robust, global network of more than 145,000 Commodores. The VUconnect online community gives you easy tools to start building and growing professional relationships with fellow alumni anywhere in just five steps.
STEP 1: Get started.
STEP 2: Refine your search.
VUconnect provides 25 criteria for your networking search. Perhaps you want to network with alumni to build industry connections or explore a career transition. You can search by city, and then fine-tune your results by adding or removing filters such as industry, school and major. You also can search for alumni career advisers who share professional advice with alumni and students. And if you would like to become a career adviser, you can select this option in your profile.
STEP 3: Review your list.
Start getting acquainted with the alumni on your list by reading their profiles. The available information will vary because of individual privacy settings, but you will quickly identify alumni working in a wide range of industries all over the world.
STEP 4: Make smart connections.
Make a plan for each contact before you reach out. You can get networking tips and career advice through career webinars like “Five ways to conduct successful informational interviews” at vuconnect.com/webinars.
STEP 5: Contact alumni.
Contacting alumni is easy. You can add someone to your VUconnect contact list and send an email through the directory to start building your Vanderbilt alumni network.
