Applications due Dec. 5
Vanderbilt has the opportunity to nominate one candidate each from the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing for the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation’s Faculty Scholars Program. The goal is to develop the next generation of national leaders in medical and nursing education. The program will support the Macy Faculty Scholars in leading new educational innovations at their home institutions and will provide opportunities for further career development through national meetings and participation in other Macy activities. This award typically provides up to $200,000 over two years.

Eligibility
The eligible candidate must:
- Have served for five or more years as a full-time faculty member, ideally at the sponsoring school.
- Have an identified senior faculty member who will provide advice on the candidate’s project and career development.
- Have an educational innovation project with the appropriate institutional support.
- Have an institutional commitment for the protection of at least 50 percent of the candidate’s time.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
The foundation has particular interest in innovations that take place in learning environments where clinical care is delivered. Within these clinical learning environments, the foundation is interested in projects which:
- Advance equity, diversity and belonging.
- Enhance collaboration among health professionals, educators and learners.
- Successfully navigate and address ethical dilemmas that arise when the principles of the health professions are in conflict with barriers imposed by the health delivery system.
Internal application process
Anyone interested in being considered as one of Vanderbilt’s nominees must submit the following (in PDF format) to LSO@vanderbilt.edu by 5 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2019:
- Brief (two-page maximum) description of the educational innovation project;
- Statement of support from candidate’s mentor indicating a commitment to advise the candidate on project work and career development;

- Brief statement from the candidate’s department chair that the candidate will have “at least 50 percent protected time to pursue a mentored educational project.” Letter must acknowledge that this grant does not allow indirect costs.** This statement can be used/modified: “The department recognizes that this grant does not allow indirect costs and will commit to covering any associated indirect costs per applicable institutional policy.”
- Brief CV (five-page max.) or NIH Biosketch.
**Process for cost sharing typically coordinated at the departmental level and approved by department chair and/or dean. Please consult LSO@vanderbilt.edu for further guidance.
