Vanderbilt University faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars and graduate and professional students are invited to submit proposals for leading teach-ins Jan. 20 as part of the university’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Series.

Launched in 1985, the series affirms Vanderbilt’s commitment to the goals of peace and justice to which King dedicated his life. This year’s series will center on the theme “The Power of Storytelling: How Our Stories Connect Us.”

Vanderbilt faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate and professional students are invited to submit proposals for leading the teach-ins.

While panels will not be allowed for this event, teams are welcome and encouraged to submit a proposal for the teach-ins.

All proposals must include an abstract (300-word limit), a brief presenter bio (300-word limit) and the central objectives. The deadline for submitting proposals is 11:59 p.m., Nov. 16.

The MLK Commemorative Series Teach-In Committee will begin reviewing proposals immediately after the deadline. Once proposals are selected, the main contact for the submitted proposals will be notified. Selected proposals will be awarded a $500 stipend.

The teach-in sessions are part of Vanderbilt’s annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Coinciding with national recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday in January, Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff gather for a weekend of programs, including a city-wide march, community service, educational forums and lectures.
