Vanderbilt’s Center for Teaching will host “The Open Classroom: Five Days of Teaching Visits” Sept. 9–13. This program will showcase examples of effective and innovative teaching practices featuring talented faculty from across the university.
During the event, faculty hosts will open their classrooms to registered faculty and graduate student visitors and participate in a 30-minute conversation about their teaching facilitated by CFT senior staff. Visitors have the option of attending one or more of the 12 courses offered over the five days, which are organized into three thematic teaching challenges:
- Teaching Hard Conversations, including courses by Michael Vandenbergh, David Daniels Allen Distinguished Professor of Law; Carwil Bjork-James, assistant professor of anthropology; Rory Dicker, senior lecturer of women’s and gender studies; and Brooke Ackerly, professor of political science and professor of law.
- Teaching Creativity, including courses by Kevin Galloway, research assistant professor of mechanical engineering; Matthew Worsnick, assistant professor of the practice of history of art; and Victor Judge, assistant dean for academic affairs and lecturer, Vanderbilt Divinity School.
- Teaching Active Learning, including courses by Lori Troxel, professor of the practice of civil and environmental engineering; Jesse Blocher, assistant professor of management; Stacey Johnson, senior lecturer of Spanish and Portuguese; Leigh Gilchrist, assistant professor of the practice of human and organizational development; and Lily Claiborne, senior lecturer in earth and environmental sciences.
The Open Classroom is one of the most highly reviewed programs at the Center for Teaching. It allows for faculty to experience their peers in action and offers opportunities for dialogue and mentorship. Faculty also have the opportunity to learn from their peers in other disciplines.
