Join Danny McKissack and Laura Barker from the Vanderbilt Plant Operations Grounds Maintenance team for “Fall Gardening with the Experts” on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center.

Learn how to start late vegetable and flower gardens, and receive information on seeds and transplanting as well as growing recommendations. Make this fall gardening season your best ever using tips from the experts.

Come dressed comfortably and casually; you will have a chance to plant cool-weather vegetable and flowering plants.

McKissack is a 39-year Vanderbilt employee and has spent the past 16 years supervising staff. His responsibilities include all grounds care for both the university and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He engages in new approaches to grounds care as demonstrated by his use of composting and sustainable and electric grounds equipment. McKissack received Vanderbilt University’s 2017 Commodore Award for his integral role in the Plant Operations management staff, going above and beyond the call of duty on multiple occasions to ensure that Vanderbilt’s more than 330-acre campus is not only safe, but also beautiful and inviting.

Barker, a horticultural specialist, has been at Vanderbilt for almost nine years. She completed a plant and soil science degree from the University of Illinois and has been working in the horticulture industry more than 17 years. Her interests include reading, cooking and vertical gardening.

This Life Phase Series event is sponsored by the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center and the Vanderbilt University Plant Operations Grounds Maintenance department. It is open to the Vanderbilt community.
