Vanderbilt to Host Antisemitism Roundtable

Posted by on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 in Past Events.

Vanderbilt Jewish Studies will bring three scholars to Vanderbilt for a roundtable discussion titled “Antisemitism in Contemporary American Politics.”

The event, moderated by Jewish Studies director Prof. Allison Schachter, will take place the evening of Thursday, November 8 at 7pm in the Central Library Community Room.

“We organized this event because of the increasing visibility of antisemitism in American political discourse and the rise of antisemitic violence,” Schachter explains. “We want to help the Vanderbilt and Nashville community make sense of these developments as we grapple with the recent mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and the increasing antisemitic rhetoric during this past election cycle.”

The three scholars are:

  • Pamela Nadell – Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women’s and Gender History and Director of the Jewish Studies Program at American University
  • Barry Trachtenberg – Michael R. and Deborah K. Rubin Presidential Chair of Jewish History, Associate Professor of History, and the Director of the Program in Jewish Studies at Wake Forest University
  • Jonathan Judaken – Spence L. Wilson Chair in Humanities, Professor of History at Rhodes College

This event is co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, E. Bronson Ingram College, the Department of Political Science, and the Program in American Studies.
