Safe and Sound Week: Slips, trips and falls safety tips – gift card prize available for employee participation

Vanderbilt University is committed to workplace safety and encourages faculty and staff to participate in this week’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Safe and Sound Week.

The Office of Workplace Safety is hosting a photo contest for all university employees to showcase safe work practices in their facilities. Participants will be entered to win a grand prize gift card to Moe’s Southwest Grill.

Slips, trips, and falls are leading causes of workplace injury in the United States.

Prevention tips to reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls in your work area include:

  • When a spill occurs, keep others from slipping by immediately cleaning it up or by placing warning signs around the hazard before attempting to clean up the spill.
  • Keeps walkways, work areas, and hallways free of debris, clutter and clear of obstructions.
  • Be sure to keep stairwells clear, well-lit, and free from unsecure objects; always use the handrails.
  • Keep filing cabinets and desk drawers shut when not in use.
  • Cover cables or cords in walkways with a durable cord cover. Do not cover with floor rugs or tape.
  • Replace burnt-out light bulbs promptly for properly lit walking and working surfaces.
  • Immediately report to your building manager of any cracks in the flooring, holes, or uneven surfaces in need of repair.
  • Wear comfortable, properly fitted shoes.
  • Give consideration to how your workspace is organized and managed, as to avoid rushing, overcrowding, and trailing equipment cables.
  • Use a stepladder to reach high materials – do not use a chair, table, or any surface on wheels. For safe use of stepladders, it is important to be trained in their use. Visit the American Ladder Institute’s Ladder Safety Training webpage for free training resources.
  • During rain storms, watch for wet floors near exterior doors and be sure to shake off your umbrella before coming inside.
  • During icy conditions, take extra time to get to your destination when walking outdoors. If you see ice that has not been treated, report the location to Facilities at 615-343-9675.
  • Most importantly, if you see something unsafe, immediately correct the hazard or report them to your supervisor.
