Employees encouraged to participate in Safe and Sound Week – gift card prize available

Vanderbilt University is committed to workplace safety and encourages faculty and staff to participate in next week’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Safe and Sound Week, Aug. 13-19.

The Office of Workplace Safety is hosting a photo contest for all university employees to showcase safe work practices in their facilities. Participants will be entered to win a grand prize gift card to Moe’s Southwest Grill.

Examples of eligible photo submissions include:

  • Proper use of personal protective equipment,
  • Correct lifting technique,
  • Using tools in the correct manner, or
  • Appropriate cleanup of a fake chemical spill.

Visit the website for contest rules and available prizes.

Managers are encouraged to further employee participation throughout the week. Many fun and informative ideas can be found on the OSHA Safe and Sound website. Highlighted activities include:

  • Taking a “safety break” with your staff to highlight safety issues specific to your work environment or to gather feedback from your staff,
  • Holding a safety scavenger hunt: form teams to find safety and health information in your work area, such as fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations, emergency guides, personal protective equipment and safety data sheets,
  • Recognizing staff who exhibit safe work practices by issuing on-the-spot rewards or positive recognition,
  • Or create your own activity!

If you would like more information regarding Safe and Sound Week, or for general safety inquiries, contact Tamara Cooley, VU Workplace Safety Officer, at tamara.j.cooley@vanderbilt.edu.

Employees are encouraged to report any safety issues or concerns to their supervisor.
