Student Affairs Comms E-Newsletter [Vanderbilt University]

Saturday, September 9, 2017

Dear Vanderbilt Students,

Once again I write to you regarding a severe weather event that has already had an impact in the Caribbean, and is expected to make landfall the U.S. later today. As Hurricane Irma bears down on Florida and other Southern states, Jose has formed in the Atlantic, and Katia has made landfall in Mexico. As always, our thoughts are with those affected by the devastation. While friends and loved ones are still cleaning up after Harvey, many in the Vanderbilt community also have connections to those in the path of Irma.

Please remember that if you experience losses and are struggling to cope and to come to terms with these events, Vanderbilt has a variety of resources to assist students. I sent this information in my late-August Hurricane Harvey email but want to provide it to you again. A list of such resources, including The Psychological & Counseling Center, The Center for Student Wellbeing, and the Office of University Chaplain and Religious Life, follows below. Campus residents may contact their resident advisers or the office of Housing and Residential Education for assistance.

International students may get in touch with International Student and Scholar Services (see below). ISSS has reached out to international students from the Caribbean and Mexico.

Undergraduates who have been affected by the storm and who have financial aid concerns should call the Office of Student Financial Aid, and financial-aid recipients should ask to speak with their financial aid officers.

Graduate and professional-school students with financial aid concerns should contact their respective representatives in the financial aid office as well their respective schools’ student services department.

The office of Active Citizenship and Service will continue meeting with leaders from student community-service groups and Vanderbilt Student Government to plan on-going campus responses to these natural disasters. Groups or individuals interested in participating in these relief efforts should call Active Citizenship and Service.

Students needing assistance may always call or email the Dean of Students office. Again, please know that we are here to help you.
