Tomorrow: Employee Appreciation presents ‘Art in the Afternoon’

“Painting with Ball and Glove,” 1949, by Morris Davidson. Oil on canvas. Rosenfield/Davidson Family Collection.

Vanderbilt University’s Employee Appreciation invites you to visit the Fine Arts Gallery at Cohen Memorial Hall for “Art in the Afternoon” tomorrow, July 18, from noon until 2 p.m. The event is a chance to enjoy the afternoon while observing works by Morris Davidson and John Taylor Arms.

The American Modernism at Mid-Century: The Work of Morris Davidson exhibition rebuilds Davidson’s progress as an artist in transitioning from different styles and how some of the foremost painters of his day helped him become who he was as an artist.

‘La Mangia, Siena’ (1927) by John Taylor Adams, American (1887–1953), etching on wove paper. Gift of Thomas B. Brumbaugh, professor of fine arts, emeritus.

The American Artists and the Legacy of the Grand Tour, 1880–1960 exhibition examines a time when American artists sought to follow a tradition that included traveling around the world to gain overall experience and education in the arts. The works included in the exhibition represent a range of media, from printmaking to painting, and the work lays out the architecture, scenery and people of many countries as the artists saw them during their journeys.

Also, don’t forget to check out Ben Shahn’s famous glass tile mosaic displayed at the Hobbs Building.
