George C. Hill will retire from his post as vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion July 1. He will immediately resume his role as professor emeritus in medical education and administration and professor emeritus of pathology, microbiology and immunology.
Hill has served as the first vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion and as the university’s first chief diversity officer since November 2015.
“George Hill stepped forward during a time of exceptionally important dialogue in our nation, and on our campus, to lead critical conversations about equity, diversity and inclusion,” Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos said. “I am deeply grateful for his vision of inclusive excellence, his counsel and his service to our community.”
As vice chancellor, Hill led collaboration with the chancellor’s Committee on Diversity, Inclusion and Community and advisory committees for students, faculty and staff. He held listening sessions across campus, launched the university’s unconscious bias training initiative and the university’s first Community Profile.
In addition, he created multiple communications channels, including a new website and two new e-newsletters to promote inclusive events and highlight the work and accomplishments of diverse students, faculty and staff. Hill also partnered with the deans of the schools and colleges to sponsor the Emerging Scholars program, which features visits by promising young minority and underrepresented scientists who are making notable discoveries as postdoctoral fellows or early career faculty. Hill’s office also partnered with the deans to initiate a seed grant program in the spring of 2017. The program funded 29 peer-reviewed proposals for pilot research or developmental projects on equity, diversity and inclusion.

“I am particularly appreciative of the staff of the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and their excellent commitment to the goals and mission of inclusive excellence,” Hill noted. In 2016, the office received the Caldwell Award from Vanderbilt Student Government for its commitment to advancing student initiatives and communication.
Hill’s 2015 appointment as vice chancellor followed a path-breaking career as a scientist and educator. He served as assistant vice chancellor for multicultural affairs and special assistant to the provost for health affairs from 2011 to 2012. From 2002 to 2011, he served as the first associate dean for diversity in medical education.
A member of the National Academy of Medicine within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine since 1998, Hill was elected a fellow of the Academy of Microbiology in 2002. In 2011, he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS cited Hill’s leadership as president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, his work advancing a diverse workforce and his contributions to tropical diseases research. Hill was elected a fellow of health disparities of the Cobb Institute of the National Medical Association in 2014 and received the first honorary doctor of science degree awarded by the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in May 2016.
Smith appointed interim vice chancellor
A national search will be conducted for Hill’s replacement. Tina L. Smith, associate vice chancellor and Chancellor’s Higher Education Fellow, will serve as interim vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion and as interim chief diversity officer while the search is underway.
“Over the past year as a Chancellor’s Higher Education Fellow, Tina has been engaged in gaining broad and deep experience and knowledge of the culture, policies and decision-making processes of higher education nationally and of Vanderbilt specifically,” Zeppos said. “This experience, combined with her 15 years of ever-growing leadership at Vanderbilt, has given her a keen understanding of the varied needs and concerns of our diverse university community. I appreciate her willingness to serve in this important role.”
Smith has served in a variety of roles at Vanderbilt since joining the university in 2002. Prior to transitioning to the chancellor’s office in 2016, Smith was the associate dean of students for inclusion initiatives and cultural competence and liaison and director of the Posse Program from 2013 to 2016. From 2007 to 2013, she served as assistant dean and senior director of student health and wellness. She served in numerous student affairs roles from 2002 to 2007, including senior director of residential education, assistant director of student conduct and academic integrity, and associate director of residential education.
“I am incredibly honored to serve the university in this interim role,” Smith said. “I look forward to building on the important work started by Vice Chancellor Hill in the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”
Smith is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the American College Personnel Association, and the Southern Association for College Student Affairs. She recently participated in the 2017 NASPA Certificate Program in Student Affairs Law and Policy, the 2015 Diversity for Leadership Institute conducted by the National Coalition Building Institute, and the 2013 NASPA Multicultural Institute. Smith was a member of the 2014-15 Vanderbilt Leadership Academy class and the 2010 NASPA Alice Manicur Symposium for Women Aspiring to be Vice Presidents of Student Affairs.
