The Office of the Provost will host a pair of events in March aimed at raising awareness of and sharing information about two major initiatives of the Academic Strategic Plan. The TIPs Fair and Reception is planned for March 20, and the University Courses Workshop Luncheon is planned for March 30. All interested faculty are invited to attend.
“Now in its third year, the TIPs initiative has produced nearly three dozen interdisciplinary projects involving hundreds of faculty members from across the university. In addition, University Courses are advancing trans-institutional learning through the development of ‘cross-college’ teaching, a cornerstone of the Academic Strategic Plan,” Wente said. “From humanist scholarship to creative expression to nanoscale science, the possibilities for applying the trans-institutional approach to faculty’s efforts are endless. It is my hope that even those who have not yet decided on a potential future course or initiative will attend one or both of these events. The goal is to let faculty see how they may use these programs to take their work to the next level, or perhaps even venture into new areas.”
TIPs Fair and Reception
The TIPs Fair and Reception is designed to bring additional awareness to the Trans-Institutional Programs (TIPs) initiative and to encourage broader participation among Vanderbilt faculty across the university. The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 20, in the Alumni Hall Reading Room (Room 206). Drinks and light refreshments will be served.
The TIPs program, a centerpiece of the Academic Strategic Plan, is designed to serve as a catalyst to support new ideas, cutting-edge research and the development of infrastructure by providing pilot funds to launch new trans-institutional centers and institutes. Awards are also made to reinvest in existing trans-institutional centers and institutes. These awards to initiatives, centers and institutes leverage strengths across the schools and colleges and allow faculty, staff and students to embrace discovery and spark learning to position Vanderbilt as a world leader in a given area.
One of the goals of the TIPs Fair and Reception is to bring together faculty with common interests in order to encourage and facilitate conversations that could lead to a future TIPs proposal submission. TIPs collaborators will be on hand March 20 to discuss their projects and answer questions. Members of the TIPs Council and program administrators also will be present to answer questions regarding program expectations, available resources and the application process.

University Courses Workshop Luncheon
The University Courses Workshop Luncheon is designed to educate Vanderbilt faculty about the University Courses program, provide tips for crafting a University Courses syllabus and drafting a winning proposal, explain the resources available, and detail the administrative responsibilities that come with teaching a University Course. The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, in Alumni Hall’s Joe C. Davis Memorial Hall (Room 202).
The University Courses program allows faculty to reach beyond departmental boundaries and provide students with innovative classes on important subjects. Chosen by a committee following a comprehensive submission process, University Courses leverage the natural synergies across Vanderbilt’s 10 schools and colleges to innovatively tackle big questions and explore multicultural subject matter.
Faculty who have taught a University Course during the 2016-17 academic year will be on hand March 30 to lead discussion and answer questions. Program administrators also will be in attendance to review the application process and requirements and answer questions about program expectations. Representatives from the Center for Teaching and the Institute for Digital Learning will attend to offer their resources in support of curricular development.
Pre-registration for the University Courses Workshop Luncheon is required, and a boxed lunch is included with registration.
