SECURITY NOTICE: Burglary off campus

On Monday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m., a non-Vanderbilt University-affiliated resident of the Village at Vanderbilt town homes, located near the Freshman Commons area, notified the Vanderbilt University Police Department of a burglary in progress. The resident stated that an unknown person was in their apartment going through their purse. When verbally confronted by the resident, the unknown person dropped the purse and fled from the area. The resident believes the suspect came into her apartment via the balcony door, which may have been unlocked at the time. VUPD officers responded to the scene and searched the area for the suspect. The incident is under investigation.

Suspect description: The suspect was described as an African American male, dark complexion, medium build, approximately 5’10” tall, with shoulder-length dreadlocks, wearing a dark knit toboggan cap, a dark-colored hoodie and dark trousers.

Risk reduction tips:

  • Do not allow strangers to enter your room or your complex. Do not open your door unless you can identify the person seeking entry.
  • Always lock your doors and windows at night, especially if you reside on the first or second floors.
  • Report any suspicious persons to VUPD. Be prepared to describe the person as best as you can.
