Ethnocentrism and ecocentrism pose a sharp binary in the ways that people(s) relate to territory and identity. For Palestinians and Israelis this binary consists of a tension between a promised land and the promise of the land.
Join Shaul Cohen, associate professor of geography and co-director of the Peace Studies program at the University of Oregon, for a workshop, “Can There Be Common Ground? Environment, Identity and Community in Palestine–Israel,” on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. in Garland 101.
This workshop will explore the challenge of identifying and adhering to environmental priorities—indeed, it will ask if this is even possible—when nature is dwarfed by meta-narratives of political geography and the urgency of establishing national infrastructures.
