Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos will host a discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 15, exploring the 2016 presidential election in the third installment of the Vanderbilt Chancellor’s Lecture Series for 2016-17.
In addition to Zeppos, “Decision 2016: A Look at America’s Future” will feature CNN Senior Political Reporter Nia-Malika Henderson, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer and Vanderbilt Distinguished Visiting Professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Jon Meacham. The panelists will discuss the implications of the historic 2016 election and share their predictions of what might be expected from the 45th president of the United States.
The discussion is scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Vanderbilt’s Langford Auditorium. A reception will precede the talk from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Langford Auditorium lobby. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-seated basis. Tickets and reservations will not be issued for this event.
Henderson has reported broadly on the 2016 campaign for CNN’s digital and television platforms, with a special focus on identity politics, exploring the dynamics of demographics, race and religion and reporting on the groups of people who help shape national elections. Prior to joining CNN, she was a national political reporter for The Washington Post, where she covered the White House, the 2012 presidential campaign, the 2010 mid-term elections and anchored The Post’s “Election 2012” blog. She also covered the first two years of the Obama administration for Politico and was Newsday’s lead reporter covering Obama’s 2008 campaign, the Democratic primary race and the Democratic National Convention. Before joining Newsday’s national staff, she wrote for The Baltimore Sun.
Henderson graduated cum laude from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in literature and cultural anthropology, and earned master’s degrees from Yale University in American studies and Columbia University in journalism.
Krauthammer writes a weekly political column that is syndicated to more than 400 publications worldwide. He is also a Fox News commentator and appears nightly on “Special Report with Bret Baier.” Krauthammer joined The Washington Post as a columnist in 1984 and received the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1987. He began his journalism career at The New Republic, where he was a writer and editor, and won the 1984 National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticism. Before going into journalism, Krauthammer was a speechwriter for Vice President Walter Mondale in 1980, helped direct planning in psychiatric research for the Carter administration, and practiced medicine for three years as a resident and then chief resident in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Krauthammer was born in New York City and grew up in Montreal, Quebec. He attended McGill University, Balliol College, Oxford University and Harvard Medical School.
