A new Vanderbilt Poll to be released at a news conference Oct. 6 will offer a snapshot of where Tennesseans stand on the presidential election as the Nov. 8 Election Day approaches.
[lquote]Current standings in the presidential horse race in Tennessee will be released and analyzed during the news conference on the Vanderbilt campus.[/lquote] The previous Vanderbilt Poll, conducted last May, showed Republican Donald Trump with a nine-point lead over Democrat Hillary Clinton and a sizeable percentage of undecided voters. There will also be a closer look at what Tennesseans think about these candidates and why.
For this new poll, John Geer and Josh Clinton, co-directors of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions at Vanderbilt, took two representative samples — one before the Sept. 26 presidential debate between the two major-party candidates and one after.
Together, the results should give an indication of the influence the debate had on Tennessee voters and their level of support for candidates Clinton and Trump and independent candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein.
Also on the survey are questions about voter enthusiasm for choice of candidate and additional queries seeking to tease out the qualities this state’s voters are seeking in a presidential candidate.
The news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Community Room of the Jean and Alexander Heard Library, on the Vanderbilt campus at 419 21st Ave. S. (Note: This is a different location than previous Vanderbilt Poll events.)
