The 39th Marine Corps Leadership Seminar, in conjunction with Marine Week Nashville, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Owen Graduate School of Management.
This event will expose students, faculty and staff to the mission accomplished-oriented leadership of the Marine Corps through ethical case studies, team building, panel discussions and lectures. Four Marine Corps captains and majors will lead selected participants through a series of events that will culminate with a lecture by Lt. Gen. Ronald L. Bailey.
Bailey is the deputy commander for plans, policies and operations at Headquarters Marine Corps. He is the first African American to take command of the 1st Marine Division of the U.S. Marine Corps and one of six African American lieutenant generals in the 236-year history of the Corps. A graduate of Austin Peay State University, Bailey will return to Nashville to impart his experience and insight to the next generation of Middle Tennessee college students, faculty and staff.
Interested students, faculty and staff are encouraged to RSVP for the event as soon as possible. Attendance will be capped at 50 participants. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants.
Vice Provost for Learning and Residential Affairs Cynthia J. Cyrus believes this is an outstanding opportunity to expose the Vanderbilt community to the leadership and service of the United States military.
“[lquote]The Marines apply leadership, teamwork and complex problem solving in real-world situations 365 days a year,” she said.[/lquote] “The Department of Defense has placed an emphasis on the benefits of diverse leadership and a diverse workforce. The training that they provide has valuable applications across an array of chosen fields.”
The Sept. 9 event is the final Marine Corps Leadership Seminar in a series of four events being held at Tennessee State University, Austin Peay State University and Middle Tennessee State University before coming to Vanderbilt.
Marine Week Nashville will take place Sept. 7-11. More information may be found at usmarineweek.com.
