Training around issues of diversity and inclusion available to Vanderbilt community members

The university’s Office of Inclusion Initiatives and Cultural Competence is offering a series of trainings for faculty, staff and graduate, professional and undergraduate students around issues of diversity and inclusion. The courses are designed to provide a foundational level of cultural-competence knowledge and practical tools for creating more inclusive environments, and to help members of the Vanderbilt community facilitate difficult conversations about differences.

The training courses are available during the fall and spring semesters. It is highly recommended that the courses be completed in order. They are as follows:

Awareness: Developing Cultural Competence 1.0
Designed to provide a foundational level of cultural competence knowledge, in this training facilitators will take participants on a journey of self-exploration through interactive activities that explore identity, culture, privilege and more, and discuss how to leverage these unique aspects of self toward the creation of a more inclusive campus and world.

Action: Developing Cultural Competence 2.0
Building on the foundation established in Developing Cultural Competence 1.0, this training dives deeper into critical analysis of the issues that inform cultural competence and diversity. The training also provides practical tools for creating more inclusive environments, continuing the work of self-exploration and identity development, and becoming an ally.

Facilitating Difficult Conversations and Recovering from Mistakes
This training takes an in-depth look at the importance of facilitating difficult conversations, promoting awareness of difference, minimizing the occurrence of micro- and macro-aggressions, and appreciating diversity in all its forms. The training also explores the equally critical work of recovering from the mistakes and bumps that inevitably occur on the road to greater competence and inclusivity.
