A broad and diverse group of 150 Medical Center and University leaders, students, and community stakeholders met Monday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Student Life Center to advance Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Strategy Framework process.

“We’re working to identify key directions that will guide us in our day-to-day decisions, that are inspiring to our people and the communities we serve, and that leverage the broadest capabilities and distinctive strengths of the Medical Center and the entire University,” said Jeff Balser, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO of VUMC and Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, while kicking off the session.

The discussion, led by Jennifer Pietenpol, Ph.D., Executive Vice President for Research, Reed Omary, M.D., M.S., Chair of the Department of Radiology and Radiologic Sciences, and William Stead, M.D., Chief Strategy Officer for VUMC, began with five-minute reports from each of 10 work groups that are helping to define future strategies in the following areas: fundamental discovery; translation; technology; design; diversity and inclusion; learning; patient care and experience; efficacy, effectiveness and reliability; engagement; and entrepreneurship.

Participants were then asked to consider strategic targets, provocative questions and “the big idea,” all aimed at positioning the medical center to lead in the future at all scales of activity and engagement — from the single molecule, to individual persons, and to entire populations impacted through health care, research and education.

More information about this process can be found at the VUMC Strategic Direction website — http://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/oor/vumc-strategic-direction. VUMC employees are invited to submit their ideas in the Strategic Direction Suggestion Box on the site.

Balser will give an update on the strategic planning process during the next Clinical Enterprise Leadership Assembly on Nov. 2.
