Alanna Pahnke, a junior in the College of Arts and Science majoring in mathematics and Spanish, plays with elementary school students in Jamaica as part of Alternative Spring Break. She joined nine other classmates on the trip, working with VIJON, an agency on the island that coordinates volunteers to help tutor local school children. This year a total of 491 Vanderbilt students participated in ASB projects, which spanned 42 U.S. cities, as well as Panama and Nicaragua (in addition to the project in Jamaica). For nearly 30 years students have spent their spring breaks working on ASB service projects.
