To compete for the awards residents submit a research abstract, and Smith won both awards for the same abstract — “A Novel Association Between High Density Lipoprotein Levels and the Risk of Acute Kidney Injury After Cardiac Surgery.” She will present her research in May at conferences of both organizations, held concurrently in San Francisco.

The SOCCA Young Investigator Award was established in 2003, only one winner per year is named, and Smith is the fourth Vanderbilt resident to have won.
