Students welcome spring, celebrate diversity at Holi festival

Hundreds of Vanderbilt students gathered on Alumni Lawn April 9 for the university’s annual commemoration of Holi, the Hindu color festival, which celebrates the arrival of spring.

The event was sponsored by the South Asian Cultural Exchange, with students of many backgrounds participating by showering each another with brightly colored powder.

“It’s a celebration of life,” said Sunny Chennupati, one of the student organizers, in an interview with The Tennessean. “The point is to break down cultural barriers—young and old, rich and poor. Vanderbilt is a place of diversity, and this lets us celebrate that to the fullest.”
