The Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU), the premier specialty society for female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, is awarding Vanderbilt’s Roger Dmochowski, M.D., professor of Urologic Surgery, with its SUFU Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 1986, is given to an individual who has made continuing and progressive contributions that have had a significant and lasting effect on the field.
“Roger is truly one of the giants of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. He has made incredible contributions to the field that have improved the health of women across the world. He is certainly deserving of this great honor, and all of us in the department couldn’t be prouder of him,” said David Penson, M.D., MPH, chair of Urologic Surgery and director of the Center for Surgical Quality and Outcomes Research.
The Award was presented to Dmochowski by Victor Nitti M.D., SUFU past president and chair of the award committee on Feb. 25 at the SUFU 2016 Winter Meeting in New Orleans.
As the award winner, Dmochowski delivered the Blaivas Lecture, titled “The Future of Female Pelvic Medicine: Humanism, Professionalism and Specialty Specific Survival.”
“I am extremely humbled to receive this award, as so many of the great mentors and founders of pelvic reconstruction and neurourology have been recipients in the past,” said Dmochowski, also vice chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences. “To have even been considered is a great honor and I am very thankful.”
As the 2016 recipient, he joins a select group of international members recognized for their leadership and involvement in the organization.
A prior recipient (1992) is Alan Wein, M.D., the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine’s Founders Professor and chief of Urology.
“Roger Dmochowski is one of those rare individuals who does everything well. He stands at the very top of his field in clinical expertise, clinical research productivity, editorial acumen, leadership of a superb fellowship program and contributions to the numerous committees of learned societies to which he belongs,” Wein said.
“His unqualified support of, and many contributions to, SUFU have helped to considerably elevate the standing of the society. The respect which others accord him is typified by his selection as the editor-in-chief of Neurourology and Urodynamics, the official journal of SUFU and the International Continence Society.”
