Genetics Institute director Cox set for next Discovery Lecture

Cox, who also directs the Division of Genetic Medicine, will discuss “Building a Catalog Linking Genes to the Medical Phenome in BioVU.”

Her lecture, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, begins at 4 p.m. in 208 Light Hall.

Cox, Mary Phillips Edmonds Gray Professor of Medicine, joined the Vanderbilt faculty this year on Jan. 1.

Her research focuses on developing novel quantitative genetic methods to identify and characterize the genetic variation that contributes to common human diseases and related complex traits, including diabetes and psychiatric disorders.

She was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) this year.

Cox earned her Ph.D. in human genetics from Yale University in 1982, and did postdoctoral work at Washington University and the University of Pennsylvania before joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1987.

Named a Pritzker Scholar at the University of Chicago in 2012, Cox is a former editor of the journal Genetic Epidemiology and a former board member of the American Society of Human Genetics.
