For more than a decade, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has honored faculty members for outstanding accomplishments and contributions in teaching and research during its annual Spring Faculty Meeting.
In 2016 faculty will also be honored under a new category — extraordinary performance of clinical service.
The four newly established awards in the clinical service category are:
• W. Anderson Spickard Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence in a Cognitive Discipline;
• Mildred T. Stahlman Award for Innovation in Clinical Care;
• Noel B. Tulipan Award for Clinical Excellence in a Surgical or Procedural Discipline; and
• Gottlieb C. (Bud) Friesinger II Award for an Outstanding Early Career Clinician.
“Our School of Medicine is dedicated to a three-part mission — excellence in research, education and clinical service,” said John Penn, Ph.D., Phyllis G. and William B. Snyder Endowed Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and associate dean for Faculty Affairs.
“For many years we have given faculty awards in research and education and only now has this practice been extended into the clinical service realm.”
Additionally, two awards previously presented as the Leadership of a Multi-investigator Team Award and the Research Enhancement Award have officially been named the John A. Oates Award for two or more faculty working collaboratively or in a multidisciplinary manner to address important biological processes and/or diseases and the Richard M. Caprioli Award for development, implementation, and/or creation of technology that elevates research and sciences of multiple investigators.
Two new awards under the teaching category were also created: the Denis M. O’Day Award for excellence in team-implemented curricular reform; and the Thomas A. Hazinski Award for effectiveness in mentoring and professional development of faculty.
A call for nominations for the faculty awards will be made in December.
