Nominate next book for Commons Reading by Oct. 1

The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons invites all Vanderbilt faculty, students and staff to nominate a book for next year’s Commons Reading for the Class of 2020.

Incoming first-year students receive the Commons Reading over the summer and are asked to complete it prior to their arrival on campus. This assignment forms the basis for a community-wide dialogue that begins during orientation, continues throughout the year and takes place in houses, Vanderbilt Visions groups and across campus. The Commons Reading for the Class of 2019 is The Madonnas of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse.

Nominating a text is easy. Send a message from your Vanderbilt email address to commons.reading@vanderbilt.edu. Include the author and title of the book, a two- to three-sentence synopsis, and the reason why you believe it would make a good reading for an incoming class. You can nominate up to three texts of any genre by current or deceased authors.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 1.

Submissions will be reviewed by a campus-wide committee consisting of faculty, students and staff who will present three to four semi-finalists to the Commons’ faculty heads of house for a final decision.
