Nashville Mayor Karl Dean was the guest speaker Aug. 31 for an undergraduate public policy studies class taught by former Mayor Bill Purcell, an adjunct professor of public policy at Vanderbilt.
For the class Cities in the 21st Century, Dean discussed “Governing the City,” described as “the role of the mayor in setting the agenda and getting it done.”
Dean has served as a guest lecturer for Purcell’s class several times in recent years. The men’s combined experience has put them at the helm of Nashville government for more than a decade and a half—Purcell from 1999 to 2007, and Dean from 2007 to present.
Purcell and Dean are Vanderbilt Law School alumni.
