VU student leads effort to collect, distribute fresh produce

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee will partner with the Nashville Farmers’ Market this Saturday to collect fresh produce sold at the farmers’ market and redistribute it through a satellite food pantry in the Bordeaux area – and you’re invited to help.

Visit the Nashville Farmers’ Market, located at 900 Rosa L. Parks Blvd., from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 8 and look for the Second Harvest booth in the market shed to donate produce and artisan goods purchased at the market. All donated items are welcomed and appreciated.

The effort is being spearheaded by Catherine Jackson, a Vanderbilt sophomore who is interning with Second Harvest this summer. “Our goal is twofold – to connect more of our community with local produce and to support our local farmers,” Jackson said.

According to Second Harvest, one in four children in Tennessee do not know where their next meal will come from. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a nutritional boon for this population. Spending just $5 at the farmers’ market can buy one pound of cucumbers or bell peppers, a dozen tomatoes or ears of corn, and two pounds of potatoes or zucchini.

Last month, the effort collected approximately 100 pounds of fresh produce, including corn, tomatoes, blueberries, squash and green beans. The food was taken to the Temple Baptist Church food pantry in Nashville and distributed to the community.
