Visible Security Measures in Schools- Academic and Behavioral Consequences

Schools are increasingly using visible security measures (surveillance cameras, metal detectors, security personnel) in an attempt to promote student safety. This presentation will discuss findings from a recent study that examined how different patterns of visible security utilization were associated with U.S. middle and high school students’ academic and behavioral outcomes. Data came from two large national surveys: the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey and the School Survey on Crime & Safety. Results from the study will be discussed in terms of implications for school security and surveillance policies.
