Safe Zone workshop set for Jan. 21

The Office of LGBTQI Life will host its next Safe Zone workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Sarratt Student Center, Room 216/220.

Safe Zone is a program aimed to create a visible network of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) individuals and their allies by providing an avenue through which any member of the Vanderbilt community can show support.

The program also creates an educational experience through the Safe Zone workshop. The three-hour workshop encourages students, faculty and staff to explore their personal identities, cultural identities, privilege and what it means to be an ally.

After attending the workshop, participants have the choice to take a Safe Zone placard. The visible placards extend a physical safe space for LGBTQI students and their allies throughout campus.

The program also creates ongoing educational experiences among Safe Zone members and the Vanderbilt community that encourage student, faculty and staff to explore cultural identity, values and stereotypes in order to better understand how these issues affect the greater community.
