Walter Clair, M.D., MPH, associate professor of Medicine and medical director of Cardiac Electrophysiology, was named interim executive director and chief medical officer for the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute (VHVI). He succeeded Keith Churchwell, M.D., who departed Vanderbilt to join Yale-New Haven Health System as vice president and executive director of Cardiovascular Services.
William O. Cooper, M.D., MPH, Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Pediatrics, professor and vice chair for Faculty Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics, and professor of Health Policy, was named associate dean for Faculty Affairs within the Faculty Affairs & Career Development Office in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and director of the Vanderbilt Center for Patient and Professional Advocacy (CPPA).
Nancy J. Cox, Ph.D., professor of Medicine and Human Genetics and chief of the Section of Genetic Medicine at the University of Chicago, was appointed founding director of the Vanderbilt Genetics Institute and director of the Division of Genetic Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 2015.
Laura Dugan, M.D., the Larry L. Hillblom Chair in Geriatric Medicine at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), was named to direct the Division of Geriatric Medicine and the Abram C. Shmerling, M.D., Professor of Alzheimer’s and Geriatric Medicine. Dugan’s research focuses on the cellular mechanisms of nerves and neuronal injury in the brain, and the role of inflammation in the aging brain and in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease.
Mitchell Edgeworth, MBA, chief operating officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital, was promoted to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics.
Amy Fleming, M.D., was named associate dean for Medical Student Affairs for Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Tina Hartert, M.D., MPH, professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, was named assistant vice chancellor for Translational Science.
In this role, Hartert will develop the infrastructure and provide the leadership to accelerate the translation of discovery into patient care, to enhance the adoption of effective therapies and to reduce the utilization of unproven therapies.
Lawrence J. “Larry” Marnett, Ph.D., the Mary Geddes Stahlman Professor of Cancer Research and University Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry, was named VUMC’s next associate vice chancellor for Research and senior associate dean for Biomedical Sciences. He succeeded Susan Wente, Ph.D.
James Mathis, J.D., Chief Clinical Enterprise Compliance Officer and assistant vice chancellor for Health Affairs, was promoted to Chief Compliance Officer for VUMC.
Julie Ozier, MHL, was named director of Vanderbilt’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and Institutional Review Board (IRB). Ozier has worked with the HRPP and IRB for 11 years, has been associate director since 2007, and at Vanderbilt since 1996.
C. Lee Parmley, M.D., J.D., professor of Anesthesiology, was named chief of staff of Vanderbilt University Hospital. Parmley’s responsibilities include oversight for inpatient discharges and inpatient surgical and intensive care volume goals and collaborating with hospital and VUMC leadership to enhance health system operating performance.
David Penson, M.D., the Paul V. Hamilton, M.D. and Virginia E. Howd Professor of Urologic Oncology, was named to become chair of Vanderbilt’s Department of Urologic Surgery, effective Jan. 1, 2015. Penson succeeds Joseph Smith Jr., M.D., the William L. Bray Professor and chair of the Department of Urologic Surgery, who will maintain his clinical and surgical practice and continue to teach and mentor.
David Raiford, M.D., associate vice chancellor for Health Affairs, senior associate dean for Faculty Affairs and professor of Medicine, was named chief of staff for the Vanderbilt Health System. He succeeded Allen Kaiser, M.D., professor of Medicine.
Henry Paul (Hank) Russell, M.D., assistant professor of Clinical Surgery and a general and thoracic surgeon at Vanderbilt Medical Group in Williamson County since 1986, was named medical director of Vanderbilt Health – Williamson/Maury.
Jenny Slayton, MSN, R.N., was appointed to the newly created role of executive director of Quality Improvement for VUMC.
Robin Steaban, MSN, R.N., VUMC associate chief nursing officer and chief administrative officer at VHVI, was promoted to the newly created position of Chief Nursing Officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics.
Susan Wente, Ph.D., a distinguished biomedical scientist who served as associate vice chancellor for Research at Vanderbilt for the past five years and helped lead the academic strategic planning process across the entire institution, was named Provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.
