Around 6 p.m. Dec. 8, the Metro Nashville Police Department received a 911 call from a female caller who said she had heard gunshots fired in Cole Hall. The Metro Nashville Police Department notified Vanderbilt University Police Department and both departments immediately dispatched multiple officers who arrived to the location within four minutes of notification. Officers responded to the situation prepared to possibly deal with an active shooter scenario. The officers cleared all floors of Cole Hall and canvassed around the building. There were no other witnesses located who heard shots fired or saw anything unusual. As of 7 p.m., the area had returned to normal.
