Celebrate National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 19, by taking public transportation, such as an MTA bus or the Music City Star commuter train, for your traveling needs.
In addition to the environmental benefits associated with removing individual cars from roads, a recent study also showed that there is a significant monetary benefit to Nashville residents who ride public transportation. According to data released by the Nashville Metro Transit Authority and the American Public Transportation Association, riders can save an average of $9,647 annually by using mass transit.
For an even greater incentive to hop on mass transit, Vanderbilt offers a subsidized “Ride to Work” program allowing all Vanderbilt employees, graduate and professional students, and VUMC volunteers to ride MTA buses for free to and from campus each day. Discounted tickets for the RTA “Relax and Ride” regional bus service and the Music City Star train also are available.
The savings amount noted above for Nashville is based on the average cost of parking and driving in Nashville but does not factor in the cost savings for these Vanderbilt-specific programs, so Vanderbilt riders should fare even better.
