Seth Bordenstein, associate professor of biological sciences, and graduate student Robert Brucker, discovered that treating a hybrid species of wasps that never lives very long with antibiotics—thus wiping out all the microbes that naturally live on and inside them—allows them to survive and thrive. A species’ existence, they conclude, not only depends on genes but on the microbes that could affect the new breed’s ability to survive long enough to reproduce.
