Commentary: How rigorous should kindergarten be?

Kindergarten classrooms are more academically oriented than ever before. In the wake of this shift from play-based learning to intensive literacy and other foundational curricula, a debate has risen as to how rigorous kindergarten should be.

Education researcher Mimi Engel, assistant professor of public policy and education at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College of education and human development, has co-written an opinion piece for Education Week that explores these challenges from a research perspective.
