The Mighty Sky

Astronomy Takes a Lyrical Turn

The Mighty Sky, a musical collaboration from Nashville-based singer–songwriters Beth Nielsen Chapman and Annie Roboff and Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory Director Rocky Alvey, received a 2014 Grammy Award nomination for Best Children’s Album.

The concept album is centered on scientific principles of astronomy with lyrics and some of the melodies by Alvey. Lesson plans written by Alvey are included on The Mighty Sky website, and the songs have been used locally in science classrooms.

“It really helps to legitimize what I’d thought all along: There is a need for bringing science and art together, and that we had a truly unique album,” Alvey says.
