David D. Mohning, executive director of the Office of Student Financial Aid and Undergraduate Scholarships, plans to retire from Vanderbilt, Vice Provost for Enrollment and Dean of Admissions Douglas L. Christiansen announced Jan. 8.
Mohning, who also holds an academic appointment as assistant professor for the practice of education in the Department of Leadership, Policy and Organizations, has been at the university since July 1991. While at Vanderbilt, he also has held concurrent appointments as the acting dean of Undergraduate Admissions and as director of Student Accounts and Student Loans. He previously worked for more than 20 years in student financial aid at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, serving as director there from 1980 to 1991.
“I am very sad for Vanderbilt that Dave will be leaving, but I am so happy for him as he begins the next chapter in his life,” said Christiansen, who noted that approximately $300 million in student financial aid funds will be processed through Mohning’s office for 4,300 undergraduate and 2,850 graduate and professional students during the current academic year.
Over more than four decades at Vanderbilt and Miami University, Mohning has held leadership positions in the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, including chair of the association’s Finance and Audit Committee, as a member of its Presidential Search Committee, and as a national representative-at-large on its Board of Directors. He also served as a past national commission director.
Vanderbilt will conduct a national search to find his successor, with Mohning staying on until that person can transition to Vanderbilt, Christiansen said. Mohning’s date of retirement is pending the outcome of the national search.
