Champ’s Corner Store open for business

Building on an already successful venture to offer a variety of safety products to patients and families, the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt has expanded its Safety Store to become Champ’s Corner Store.

Building on an already successful venture to offer a variety of safety products to patients and families, the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt has expanded its Safety Store to become Champ’s Corner Store.

One of a kind in Middle Tennessee, Champ’s Corner Store promotes the mission that every child deserves to grow up healthy and safe — from birth to teens — by combining the Safety Store and the hospital’s Baby of Mine Boutique. Products include everything from lactation products for nursing mothers and sleep sacks for infants to bike helmets and car seats. Open to the public, the store serves families in Middle Tennessee and beyond and is located on the second floor of Children’s Hospital in the Family Resource Center.

At a recent grand opending event, families were able to take a photo with local mascots — Champ, Nashville Sounds’ Ozzie, Nashville Predators’ Gnash or PFD Panda — as well as shop the latest products. When the Safety Store first opened in 2009, Children’s Hospital was one of six children’s hospitals across the country to open one, made possible by funding from the National Association of Children’s Hospital and Related Institutes.

“Our Safety Store has been a model for similar hospital-based programs across the country. We are so pleased to join forces with the lactation team to provide additional resources and education for our visitors,” said Sarah Haverstick, Safe Children Program Manager.

“We now have a comprehensive range of products and education and related services that can benefit all families. Whether you are expecting your first child or looking for ways to improve your emergency preparedness, we can help.”

The store also offers car seat checks with certified child passenger safety technicians, available by appointment, as well as hospital-grade breast pump rentals and other items to promote breast-feeding.

“Breast milk is best for babies and the store has carefully selected quality lactation supplies to help moms reach their breast-feeding goals,” said Anna Morad, M.D., director of Vanderbilt’s Newborn Nursery and assistant professor of Pediatrics. “I also appreciate that busy parents can access car seat education, safe sleep information and other infant safety products in one stop.”
