Vanderbilt University holds the No. 20 position among Best National Universities in the 2013 Washington Monthly College Rankings. The rankings were announced Aug. 26.
The magazine rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s) and Service (encouraging students to give back to their communities and the country).
The University of California-San Diego topped the Best National Universities list for the third consecutive year. This is the eighth year Washington Monthly has published its rankings.
