Program fosters understanding of U.S. academic system and American culture
From Aug. 19 to 23, Vanderbilt University will host a Fulbright Gateway Orientation for newly arrived Fulbright foreign students. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Fulbright Gateway Orientation program is made available to Fulbright foreign students as part of its flagship Fulbright Program and designed by the Institute of International Education in cooperation with ECA.
Fulbright Gateway Orientations are intended to address participants’ roles and responsibilities as Fulbrighters and to enhance their skills for academic, personal and professional success while in the United States.
The Vanderbilt-hosted Fulbright Gateway Orientation will feature interactive workshops on topics such as “Understanding U.S. Academic Culture,” “U.S. Politics and People” and “Creative Leadership.” Through these events, participating students will develop a better awareness of the United States and their leadership roles as Fulbrighters.
Among the events and sessions are a tour of Vanderbilt’s First Amendment Center; a trip to The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson; a picnic dinner at Centennial Park; and a night of line dancing at the Wildhorse Saloon.
The press is invited to meet with Fulbright foreign students and to attend any public tours. A Fulbright Program spokesperson from the U.S. Department of State also will be available upon request to provide further background information.
Vanderbilt’s Fulbright Gateway Orientation is one of 10 being hosted across the United States. These orientations, an integral part of the Fulbright experience, support the mission of the Fulbright Program: to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
