After more than 35 years of helping undergraduates in the College of Arts and Science, Associate Dean M. Fräncille Bergquist has announced she will retire at the end of the current academic year.
Bergquist joined Vanderbilt in 1977 and became associate dean of academic affairs in 1983. She has been responsible for organizing the pre-major advising program, and on a daily basis, monitoring and advising students on their academic progress. She has played a key role in orientation activities and supervises the McTyeire International House project, which she helped to establish.
In her role as associate dean, she’s counseled thousands of students, helped them determine academic and career paths, and been a friend to students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni. Bergquist is also an associate professor of Spanish and was awarded the Madison Sarratt Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1983. She was the 2003 recipient of the Chancellor’s Cup, presented to a faculty member for outstanding contributions to student-faculty relationships outside the classroom.
As part of honoring the dean and her impact, the College of Arts and Science has created a website, Celebrating Dean Bergquist. Colleagues, friends, students, alumni and parents are encouraged to submit stories, photos or congratulations for the dean.
