Rear Adm. Nora Tyson, BA’79, vice director of the Joint Staff and the first female commander of a U.S. Navy carrier strike group, has received the Distinguished Alumna Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a member of the Vanderbilt alumni community. The award was preasented in October during Reunion.
Tyson, a two-star admiral, became vice director of the Joint Staff in February 2012. She is former commander of the U.S. Navy’s Carrier Strike Group Two, where she led 80 combat aircraft and 13 ships, including her flagship, the USS George H.W. Bush. The Memphis, Tenn., native previously commanded Logistics Group Western Pacific in Singapore and the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, which provided humanitarian relief after Hurricane Katrina and deployed twice to the Persian Gulf.
