Ann Scott Carell of Nashville died Aug. 20, 2012. She and her husband, the late Monroe Carell Jr., BE’59, former Vanderbilt Board of Trust member, were longtime philanthropic leaders.
At Vanderbilt they supported many important efforts, including endowed scholarships for undergraduate students and endowed chairs in the Department of Pediatrics. Their commitment to care for sick children resulted in a foundational gift and subsequent campaign for the construction of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
She was an advocate of education and taught several years in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. She was a member of the board of trustees of Harpeth Hall girls’ preparatory school, which is home to the Ann Scott Carell Library. She and her husband funded scholarships at Aquinas College, Belmont University, Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., the City University of New York, Ensworth High School, and John Paul II High School in Nashville.
Carell is survived by three daughters and six grandchildren, including Claire Stadler Lawhorne, BS’09.
