Vanderbilt University invites the public to spend an evening with Grammy award-winning recording artist and philanthropist John Legend Friday, March 16.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for “A Conversation with John Legend” that begins at 8 p.m. in the Student Life Center Ballroom. General public tickets are $30 and available now at all Ticketmaster locations. Tickets for Vanderbilt students are $15 and faculty/ staff tickets are $20 – both are available only at the box office in Sarratt Student Center.
Legend’s debut album, Get Lifted, sold more than three million copies worldwide and earned him eight Grammy nominations. He would go on to win Grammys for Best New Artist, Best R&B album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the album’s track “Ordinary People.” His follow-up album, Once Again, earned an RIAA platinum certification and a Grammy award for the single “Heaven,” which also won Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
In 2010, Legend and the band The Roots released Wake Up!, a compilation of music from the ‘60s and ‘70s with an underlying theme of awareness, engagement and social consciousness which won two Grammy awards for Best R&B Album and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. Wake Up! also includes Legend’s original composition “Shine,” which won a Grammy award for Best R&B Song and is featured in Oscar award winner Davis Guggenheim’s domestic education reform documentary Waiting for “Superman.”
Legend sits on the boards of The Education Equality Project, Teach for America, Stand for Children and the Harlem Village Academies and co-chairs the Harlem Village Academies’ National Leadership Board. He is the national spokesperson for Management Leadership for Tomorrow, a non-profit organization that assists the next generation of minority business leaders.
“A Conversation with John Legend” is hosted by the Vanderbilt Programming Board’s VenUe, a student-run organization responsible for planning and implementing evening programming for the university, and the Office of Student Campus events, under the auspices of Vanderbilt’s Office of the Dean of Students.
