Blair Student Chamber Ensembles
A musical potpourri of chamber ensembles, including string, woodwind and brass instruments. Blair collegiate students perform familiar masterworks as well as rare and new chamber music gems. This semester features a total of nine groups, including a string trio, two piano trios and a piano quartet, a woodwind trio and various piano duos and duets. Trombonanza! The trombone tactics of NJO members Barry Green and Roy Agee are on display at this joint concert with the Blair Big Band. State of the Word
Blair School of Music welcomes the fourth annual State of the Word to Ingram Hall, featuring the region’s top college, high school and middle school poets and spoken-word artists. Participating poets have received standing ovations in front of TEDxNashville, Leadership Nashville and the Tennessee State Senate. They have performed at CMT, Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the Metro Council, TPAC and the Franklin Theatre. Come witness this powerful art form and support the next generation of writers, thinkers, artists and leaders. The event is a collaboration between Vandy Spoken Word and Youth Speaks Nashville.
The event is made possible through the generous support of Blair School of Music, the Martha Rivers Ingram Commons at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt’s Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, the Vanderbilt Office of Admissions, the Metro Nashville Arts Commission, the Tennessee Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Vanderbilt Writing Studio. Proceeds will benefit Youth Speaks Nashville and the placement of poet mentors in Middle Tennessee’s public schools. Tickets: $5 for adults and $3 for students. Cellist Laurence Lesser performs the Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach in a special two-concert presentation.
Laurence Lesser was a top prizewinner in the 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and has been a soloist with orchestras around the world. One of the world’s foremost cello pedagogues, he has taught since 1974 at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he also was the president for 13 years. He was a teaching assistant to legendary cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and was a guest on the historic Heifetz-Piatigorsky concerts and recordings.
