Kara Cooney, host of the Discovery Channel series Out of Egypt and an assistant professor of Egyptian art and architecture at the University of California-Los Angeles, will discuss Egyptian burial practices at noon, Thursday, Nov. 3, at Vanderbilt Divinity School, Room G-20. The talk is free and open to the Vanderbilt community.
Cooney’s lecture will address Thebes funerary strategies of the Late Bronze Age to the Third Intermediate Period in reflection of theological and social shifts. She will examine the mummy as evidence of adaptations made in reaction to the unrest of the Late Bronze Age. She also will address how investment in mummification provided a sense of psychological security for Theban elites.
Cooney will give a lecture, “The Ancient Egyptian Mummy: A Defense Against Tomb Robbery,” at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
